Sweet Kozhukattai (Sweet dumpling)

Today is Vinayaka Chaturti!  Lord Ganesha’s birthday!. And this particular dish is believed to be his favorite.  So its an Indian tradition to cook this dish on this day and offer it to the deity. This is a simple dumpling with a sweet stuffing made of coconut and jaggery.


Outer layer:

Rice flour – 1 cup

Salt – a pinch

Water – 3/4 cup

For the filling:

Jaggery – ¾ cup

Coconut shredded – 1cup

Cardamom – a pinch

1. For the outer layer:  To 3/4 cup of warm water, add the rice flour and mix well. Add salt and stir the mixture until it reaches a dough like consistency.

2. For the filling: In a saute pan, mix jaggery, coconut and cardamom. Stir and cook for a few minutes till all the ingredients come together.

Step 1:

Roll the dough into a small ball. Its important to rub your palms with oil since the dough is sticky.

Step 2:

Now press the center of the ball to make a depression. Use your thumb and the other fingers and press the sides and  make a nice cup

Add the filling in the center of the cup. Bring the corners of the cup to the center and close the cup. Make a tiny nose at the tip.

4. Now steam the dumpling for about 7-9 minutes.
